San Diego County used this animated short film to educate kids about tsunamis.  An animated crab teaches students valuable tsunami preparedness information. This is good information for both kids and adults!

Tsunamis are caused by an earthquake beneath the sea floor. It is a series of ocean waves that can affect coastal areas. Tsunamis can be thousands of miles long and hundreds of miles apart and in the very deep ocean the waves can travel as fast as a jet plane – up to 600 miles per hour. Once a Tsunami approaches land, that is when it becomes dangerous. It can wipe out houses, roads, cars, and people.

Tsunami Warning Signs:

  • Unusual disappearance of water at the ocean.
  • Feel a very strong earthquake near the ocean that knocks people off their feet.
  • Feel a very strong earthquake near the ocean lasting 20 seconds or longer.
  • Hear a loud ocean roar.

What do to if you are near the coast:

  • Immediately move inland, away from the ocean.
  • Move to higher ground.
